- Match Required: The federal share may not exceed 80% of total eligible project costs, so applicants generally must provide at least a 20% non-federal match. Eligible Tribal applicants may use Tribal Transportation Program funds as match, and certain insular areas can receive a 100% federal share when the required local match is under $200,000.
- Purpose of Funding: To improve roadway safety by reducing or eliminating roadway fatalities and serious injuries through planning, infrastructure, behavioral, and operational initiatives implemented through comprehensive safety action plans and the Safe System Approach.
- Eligibility: Eligible applicants include metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), political subdivisions of a State or territory (such as cities, towns, counties, special districts, and certain transit agencies), federally recognized Tribal governments, and multijurisdictional groups of those entities. States and territories themselves are not eligible applicants. For Implementation Grants, applicants also need an eligible Action Plan plus roadway ownership/maintenance responsibility, roadway safety responsibility, or an agreement with the roadway owner.
